How to prep for a Brazilian sugaring hair removal appointment

Writer: Ryane Ashley Ryane Ashley

To ensure the best experience and results, it’s essential to prepare properly before your Brazilian hair removal appointment.

Here's how:

The Importance of Staying Hydrated

  • Proper hydration makes the skin more elastic and helps your skin remain healthy and plump, reducing the chances of irritation or dryness during the hair removal process. This helps make the hair removal process less painful as the skin can better stretch and recover from the pulling action of the sugar paste.

    • When skin is dry, it can become more prone to damage during hair removal. This includes redness, bruising, or even abrasions.

  •  Hydrated skin helps the sugar paste adhere better to the hair and not the skin which decreases likelihood of inflammation or irritation after sugaring. Allowing smoother hair removal and and more effective results, especially for fine or shorter hair.

Let Your Hair Grow

  • Hair length should be about 1/4 inch long (4-5 weeks of growth) for optimal results & comfort

  • Approximately the length of a grain of rice. This typically means allowing about two weeks of growth after shaving.

Gently Exfoliate

  • Exfoliate 2-3 times a week (stop 24-48 hours prior to services)

  • Use a dry brush, a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt, but avoid exfoliating on the day of the appointment to prevent skin sensitivity.

  • Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, etc. Stop 1 week prior.

Avoid Moisturizers and Oils

  • On the day of your appointment, ensure the area is clean and free from lotions, oils, or creams, as these can interfere with the sugaring process.

  • Avoid moisturizers and deodorant on services areas.

  • Shower beforehand, but skip applying any skincare products to the area.

Manage Discomfort

  • If you’re concerned about discomfort, you may consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your appointment.

  • Additionally, avoid caffeine on the day of the appointment, as it can heighten sensitivity.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

  • Opt for loose-fitting clothing on the day of your appointment to reduce friction and irritation post-sugaring.

Communicate with Your Sugarist

  • Inform your technician of any skin sensitivities, allergies, or medical conditions. Open communication ensures a safer and more comfortable experience.
